Capitals Retrospective
As a final project of sorts, this piece looks back on the ups and downs of the Washington Capitals season. I’ve mixed audio from interviews dating back to the first game of the year with highlights and lowlights from WFED, all set to a Beethoven Symphony. Follow the crescendos of a tumultuous season, all the way to the night the Caps clinched a playoff berth.
Includes audio from pretty much every Capitals Player, as well as Dale Hunter and George McPhee. Highlights are from WFED broadcasts, with John Walton on play-by-play. Music taken from www.freeplaymusic.com
100 Days of Hunter
In Washington, DC, we usually evaluate presidents after their first 100 days in office. So why can’t we do the same with hockey coaches?
This piece looks back on the first hundred days of the Washington Capitals under Dale Hunter. While their position in the standings has not improved much, has Dale’s defense first system set in? Are the Caps in a better position to compete in the playoffs now, than they were at the beginning of the season?
As heard on Saturday Night Caps on 1500 AM on March 10, 2012.
Includes audio from George McPhee, Dale Hunter, Dean Evason, Karl Alzner, Jeff Halpern, Matt Hendricks, Mike Green, Brooks Laich, and Ted Leonsis.
Zach’s Caps Report – February 27, 2012
Today’s story looks at the mood in the Capitals locker room as the trade deadline approaches. Coming off two wins against Toronto and Montreal, the team isn’t in desperation mode. Mike Knuble, one of the Caps’s more trade-able assets, was said he was comfortable and looking forward to what the next few hours might bring.
Includes Audio from Troy Brouwer, Dennis Wideman and Mike Knuble. All audio recorded this morning, February 27, 2012, at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. Note that this story was written before the 3pm trade deadline.
Zach’s Caps Report – February 16, 2012
This story takes a look at the opposing side, as the San Jose Sharks defeated the Washington Capitals 5-3 Monday night. It was one of the stranger games this season, with a surprise goaltender start, and a bouncing puck that looked more like a baseball than anything else. But with seven straight road games after this one, San Jose will take the points and the momentum.
Includes audio from Joe Pavelski, Patrick Marleau and Todd McClellan. All quotes recorded at Verizon Center on Monday, February 13, 2012
Zach’s Caps Report – February 7, 2012
This morning’s skate saw the return of Brooks Laich, two days after leaving a game a against Boston with an injury to his left knee. While he’s not assured a spot in tonight’t lineup, his teammates are certainly enjoying the possibility.
Audio from Laich, Dale Hunter and Karl Alzner, with cameos by Troy Brouwer and Matt Hendricks.
All audio recorded today, 2/7/12, at Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Ballston, VA.
Zach’s Caps Report – January 8, 2012
Today, we take a look back at a road loss for the Caps. They played the first two periods well, against a potent San Jose Sharks team. But fell apart, allowing three unanswered goals in the third period. San Jose wins, 5-2, leaving the Caps without a win in Northern California since 1993.
Includes audio from Alex Ovechkin, Dale Hunter, and Karl Alzner. Recorded after the game on Saturday, January 7 at HP Pavillion at San Jose.
Zach’s Caps Report – January 7, 2012
Today’s storylines feature the defensive success Washington has enjoyed over the past week. The Caps are riding a four game winning streak – Dale Hunter’s first as head coach. The penalty kill is a perfect 11-for-11 over that stretch. And, the Caps are relieved to have Mike Green back in the everyday lineup.
Audio from John Carlson, Dale Hunter, Jeff Schultz and Mike Green. Recorded January 6, 2012, after practice at HP Pavillion at San Jose.
